History: Galway film historical archive – a timeline all about the history of Galway as a city and region of film. This timeline is an easy-to-use ‘swipe-able’ carousel of images and information with an external “more info” link. What have we discovered so far? With the help of local historians William Henry and Tom Kenny we know that – dating back to 1898 – the first ‘living picture’ was shown at Mr. Mack’s Assembly Room in Eyre Square. And in 1905, the first reported short film’ or ‘cinematograph’ was shot in Galway as part of Burton Holmes’ Travelogues. Galway’s film history dates back at least 126 years (possibly 127 years – TBA once we get some more details!)
Please note – the timeline has been well researched with the support of local historians, but it is still a work in progress and we welcome your suggested edits with supporting information at info@ardan.ie
Check out the new website and tell us what you think!
