Galway Film Society returns to Pálás for its first Summer season!

Galway Film Society returns to Pálás for its first Summer season! GFS are one of the longest running film societies in Ireland in their 55th year.

Once again, GFS will present local audiences with the opportunity to see the best new and award-winning films from all over the world on the big screen. Highlights in the Summer programme are Happy Lazarro, Woman at War and In Safe HandsThe season kicks off on May 19th and runs until the 1st July.

Don’t miss out on GFS Season tickets, which are on sale now from Pálás Box Office and over the phone only at a reduced ticket price of 42 euro for the bundle of six, for the first week of the summer season. Tickets for individual films are also available to purchase online or over the phone.

Call for Entries | 2019 Busan Intercity Film Festival

The 3rd Busan Intercity Film Festival

Will be held from May 31st to June 3rd in Busan, South Korea, and they have put out a call for film submissions from other UNESCO Creative Cities.

Each year they decide on a slogan and screen a selection of films from each city, and this year that slogan is “Our City“. Galway City of Film will be choosing a shortlist of five films on this theme to send to Busan and to represent the City.

We are going to invite outstanding films from various cities around the world that show different cultural characteristics and diversity while strengthening our relationship and friendship.” – Busan Intercity Film Festival Committee.

This is a fantastic opportunity for local Galway filmmakers to have their films shown in an international film festival, so be sure to send your film into us, and you’ll be in with a good chance of having it screened in Busan, Korea!

Requirements:

  • The film should be shot in Galway, or be directed by a Galwegian.
  • Your submission should reflect the theme of “Our City”.
  • You should have completed work on this film sometime in the last two years.
  • All entries must carry English subtitles.
  • All entries must be accompanied by stills from the film and some images of the director. (In the case that the film is chosen, these images will be used in the program.)
  • All submissions should come with a fully completed Application Form and be sent to admin@galwayfilmcentre.ie
  • All film files should be MOV, MP4, or H264.

The deadline for submissions is Monday April 22nd.

'Just To Be Sure'

AFTER Erwin accidentally discovers his father is not his biological father, he goes on a search to find him. He is also dealing with his daughter’s unplanned pregnancy, while his new girlfriend, Anna, just might be his sister!

This is the French film, Just To Be Sure, which will be screened by the Galway Film Society in the Pálás Cinema this Sunday and Monday at 6.30pm. To buy tickets from Pálás, click here.

The Hole in the Ground | Live Q&A with Director Lee Cronin | March 1st | Pálás

Trying to escape her broken past, Sarah O’Neill (Seána Kerslake) is building a new life on the fringes of a backwood rural town with her young son Chris (James Quinn Markey). A terrifying encounter with a mysterious neighbour shatters her fragile security, throwing Sarah into a spiralling nightmare of paranoia and mistrust, as she tries to uncover if the disturbing changes in her little boy are connected to an ominous sinkhole buried deep in the forest that borders their home.

 

Galway City of Film are delighted to support this screening, taking place at Pálás on Friday March 1st at 6.15pm.

What will certainly be a terrifying first look at this new Irish horror will be accompanied by a Q&A with director Lee Cronin.

The award winning Irish feature documentary The Lonely Battle Of Thomas Reid is currently showing in the Eye Cinema Galway. The acclaimed feature documentary is the work of director Feargal Ward and a former Galway Film Centre employee – editor/sound designer Tadhg O’Sullivan.

This evening (Thursday 25th October) sees the film having a special event screening at the Eye Cinema, with a screening at 6.50pm followed by a discussion panel where the film’s producer Luke McManus being joined by Lelia Doolan, Risteard O’Domhnaill and Tony Tracy to talk about the film and the crossover between documentaries and political activism. We’ll be going for a drink afterwards too.

Lenny Abrahamson to attend The Little Stranger Q&A | PÁLÁS

On Sunday 23rd at 3pm Pálás will open be hosting a Q&A with Oscar Nominated director Lenny Abrahamson for the opening night screening of his new film The Little Stranger.

The Little Stranger is an adaptation of Sarah Waters novel of the same name, and  promises to be a chilling horror film, certainly not to be missed!

Galway Jazz Festival Hosting a Screening of ‘Jazz On A Summer’s Day’

The Galway Jazz Festival have launched their programme for their 2018 season, running from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th of October!

Their eclectic programme holds all kind of events including musical performances, panel discussions, and poetry readings.

Of particular interest is their screening of Jazz On A Summer’s Day, photographer Bert Stern’s documentary covering the 1958 Newport Jazz festival in Rhode Island, which will take place in An Pálás on Sunday 7th at 11 am.

This screening is presented by the Galway Jazz Festival with the support of Galway City of Film and Galway Bay FM.

Athenry Walled Towns Day | August 19th

As part of National Heritage Week, Athenry will be hosting a one-day festival known as the Walled Towns Day on August 19th!

From food stalls to craft workshops, puppet shows to medieval re-enactments Athenry Walled Towns Day will be an action-packed day of festivities.

And on top of that, they will be showing the hurling match that evening! Galway Versus Limerick.

Little Cinema is back in action this August 29th!

Galway Arts Centre seeks submissions for Culture Night!

The Galway Arts Centre will be hosting the ‘Lost and Found’ short film screening for this year’s Culture Night on September 21st.

They are now open for submissions of short films to be screened for this event, so be sure to send your films on for their consideration!

Their program hopes to screen brave original films that explore themes of things lost, transience, and the temporary or unexpected.
