Cinephile Paradiso The Birds

Cinephile Paradiso Turns 1 This September

By Enjoyment, Entertainment, Local Interest, Movies, News, Participation, Screenings

Cinephile Paradiso will hit a great milestone this September as it marks its first birthday. The classic cinema discussion group, founded by Mikey Whelan and Holly Buckley, has thrived and formed a welcoming and passionate community of cinema lovers over the past year.

Cinephile Paradiso began its journey last September with the aim to gather the Galway film community together (no better place than the UNESCO City of Film) and encourage the discussion of cinema. Kicking off with Alfred Hitchcock’s reknowned thriller, Rear Window, Cinephile Paradiso continued showcasing classics such as What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Sunset Boulevard, Dr Strangelove, Bonnie and Clyde and much more.

They didn’t stop there; Cinephile Paradiso also collaborated with the Silent Cinema on Dominic Street numerous times over the year bringing events like ‘The Haunted Nickelodeon’, a night of the first ever horror films on screen, and ‘The Look of the Irish,’ in collaboration with Galway City Council, which explored Ireland’s earliest cinematic representations.

Now, as they celebrate their first anniversary, Cinephile Paradiso invites you to join them on September 7th at Pálás Cinema for a special screening of Hitchcock’s spine-chilling horror, The Birds, a tribute to the group’s first screening and the film’s 60th anniversary. The screening will be followed by a

discussion in the bar (as usual). Also, the award-winning Connemara Brewing Company will be hosting a beer tasting for all ticket holders to mark this special occasion.

The celebration doesn’t stop here. Cinephile Paradiso will continue with their regular programme at Pálás Cinema on the first Thursday of every month. On October 5th, they will be screening House of Usher – the 1960 adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s beloved story starring Vincent Price.

EU50 Screening 2023

EU50 Screening at Pálás Cinema: The Double Life of Veronique

By Entertainment, History, Local Interest, Movies, News, Participation, Press, Unesco

Galway City of Film, managed by Ardán, and supported by Galway City Council, hosted a free screening for a European Night of Film at the Pálás Cinema on 11th May 2023 at 7pm, to celebrate EU50.

We were joined for a pre-screening reception in the Pálás Bar by the Deputy Mayor of Galway, Councillor Mike Hubbard, and the Polish Consul Patrick O’Sullivan.

The Double Life of Veronique (1991), directed by Krysztof Kieslowski is two parallel stories about two identical women; one living in Poland, the other living in France. In the story, the two women don’t know each other, but their lives are nevertheless profoundly connected. (IMDb).

The film garnered a Golden Globe nomination as well as several wins at Cannes Film Festival.

Galway City of Film (Ceantar Scannán) is a UNESCO designation held jointly by Galway City Council and Galway County Council since 2014, and managed on their behalf by Ardán.

Talent Development Academy for Television Drama will be led by Galway Film Centre

By Local Interest, News

  • New National Steering Group to be set up in coming weeks
  • Diverse and Regional Stakeholders across Ireland to form part of Academy Consortium
  • €600,000 National Talent Development Fund

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland has appointed the Galway Film Centre as the leading organisation to manage the establishment of a Talent Development Academy for Television Drama, an initiative for developing and driving opportunities for diverse and regional talent on a national level.

After an open and competitive selection process, the Galway Film Centre has been selected to manage the decision-making process and timely roll out of talent development activity.

Engaging with a wide range of key stakeholders across the country, the Centre will work closely with the regions, community groups, industry bodies and other diverse entities to form a Steering Group at a national level. The Steering Group, along with representatives from Screen Ireland and Screen Skills Ireland, the skills development unit within Screen Ireland, will in turn set out the key principles of the Talent Academy, including the allocation of the fund, valued at €600,000. The team will now begin work on the second stage of the Academy roadmap by finalising and reaching out to all groups and organisations across the country to facilitate the inaugural meeting of the Academy.

Andrew Byrne, Project Manager at Screen Ireland, said: “The national Talent Development Academy is an ambitious, forward-thinking initiative to help build the television drama sector in Ireland, one that is inclusive and supportive of creative talent nationwide. We are delighted the Galway Film Centre will lead and manage this national approach to talent development, and ensuring all voices, regional and diverse, are represented by the Academy.”

Gareth Lee, Skills Development Manager, added: “Regional skills development is a key priority for Screen Skills Ireland and the Talent Development Academy’s highly collaborative approach central to its success. We are delighted to work closely with the Galway Film Centre in shaping how the Talent Development Academy will address skills needs and opportunities for TV drama nationwide.”

Alan Duggan, Manager at Galway Film Centre, said: “The Talent Development Academy for television drama is a hugely important initiative by Screen Ireland that acknowledges the need to support the growth of regional and diverse creative screen talent in Ireland. We at Galway Film Centre are honoured to be selected as the lead organisation and look forward to working with Screen Ireland and all stakeholders including our regional peers and community bodies to deliver on the ambition of the Academy.”

The Talent Development Academy was announced in 2020 as part of the July Stimulus Support Package provided by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. It will focus on regional development and diversity, with an emphasis on supporting career growth opportunities for creative talent in TV drama. As part of its remit, the Academy will develop a diverse and regional pool of senior creative talent, while also addressing the needs of emerging talent within the industry who may at present feel precluded from a thriving career within television drama.

Screen Ireland is committed in its ambition to highlight Ireland as a centre of excellence in television drama production. The Government’s July Stimulus Package in 2020 recognised the strong potential for growth in the sector and reiterated Screen Ireland’s aim to drive the expansion of the indigenous TV drama and animation sector, allowing Irish talent to create high-end screen content for both Irish and international audiences.
